ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sailing rigs

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen a big tall boat with a bunch of sticks sticking up in the air? That's called a sailboat! And the sticks sticking up are called masts, and they hold up the sails which help the boat move through the water.

Now, there are different types of sails and ways to set them up, and that's called a sailing rig. Think of it like setting up different tents when you go camping.

One type of sailing rig is called a sloop. This means the boat has one mast and one main sail. There is also a smaller sail called a jib that sits in front of the main sail. It's kind of like a smaller hat on top of a bigger hat.

Another type of rig is called a schooner. This means the boat has two masts, with the taller one towards the back. The sails on a schooner are usually smaller and there are more of them. Think of it like setting up two smaller tents instead of one big one.

The last type we'll talk about is a ketch. A ketch has two masts, with the taller one towards the front. The sails on a ketch are also smaller and there are usually more of them. It's kind of like setting up two smaller tents, one in front of the other.

Different types of sailing rigs work better in different wind conditions and for different types of sailing. Just like how different types of clothes are better for different types of weather.

Overall, a sailing rig is just the way the sails are set up on a boat to help it move through the water. And just like different types of clothes, different types of rigs work better in different situations.
