ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sampeah

Sampeah is a polite way of greeting or showing respect in Cambodia. It is done by bringing your hands together in front of your chest, as if you were praying, and then bowing your head down. It’s kind of like saying “hello” and “nice to meet you,” but with more respect and honor.

Imagine you have a friend who is older or more important than you, like your teacher or your grandma. When you see them, you might want to show them how much you respect and admire them. So you put your hands together like you’re going to pray, and then bow your head down to show how much you respect and honor them. This is what sampeah is like, but it’s a custom in Cambodia and is done for anyone who deserves respect, not just friends or family members.
