ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sandeq

Okay, so imagine you're playing in the sand at the beach, and you want to make a sandcastle. You scoop up some sand into a bucket and pack it tightly, then turn it over and tap it out onto the ground. What you have now is a block of sand.

Now imagine taking many of these blocks and stacking them on top of each other, each one smaller than the last. You end up with a sort of pyramid shape made entirely out of sand blocks.

This is similar to what a sandeq is. It's actually a traditional musical instrument from the island of Lombok in Indonesia. It's made by stacking many small pieces of bamboo on top of each other, with each layer smaller than the last, until you have a sort of pyramid shape.

When you hit the sandeq with a stick, it makes a sound. But the sound doesn't just come from hitting the very top layer of bamboo, like a drum or cymbal. Instead, the sound vibrates through all the layers of bamboo, which gives it a unique and interesting tone.

So basically, a sandeq is a musical instrument that's made by stacking many layers of bamboo on top of each other, in a pyramid shape, until you have a sort of tower. When you hit it with a stick, the sound vibrates through all the layers of bamboo and creates a cool and distinctive sound.
