Sangley

Sangley is a word that refers to the Chinese people who lived in the Philippines a long time ago. They were called sangley because they came from a place in China called "Zhanglei." These people were traders and they came to the Philippines to do business with the local people. They traded different things like silk, ceramics, spices, and tea. They eventually settled in the Philippines and some even married local people.

When the Spanish came to the Philippines a long time ago, they saw that the sangley people were very good at business and trading. The Spanish allowed them to stay and continue to do business in the country. However, the Spanish also treated them differently from the local people. They had to pay more taxes and they were not allowed to live in certain areas of the city.

Even though the sangley people faced discrimination, they still continued to trade and do business in the Philippines. They even helped build the city of Manila and were known for their skills in building ships. Today, the term sangley is not used much anymore, but it is still remembered as an important part of the Philippines' history and culture.
