ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sastrugi

Sastrugi are bumps or ridges that form on the snow, kind of like ripples on the beach. Imagine you're playing with sand on the beach and you use your hands to make little hills and valleys. That's like what happens on the snow when winds blow really hard and create little hills and valleys. These bumps can be really big or small, but they can make it hard to walk, ski or snowboard because it's not a smooth surface. It's like trying to ride a bike on a bumpy road. Sometimes these bumps can be really pretty to look at because they catch the light in different ways and can look like waves frozen in time on the snow. But they can also make it really difficult to travel across snowy areas, especially if you're pulling a sled or carrying a heavy backpack. So sastrugi might look cool, but they can make getting around really hard.
