ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Scansion

Scansion is like playing a game with words where you have to figure out which ones are strong and which ones are weak. Just like when you play with blocks, some blocks are big and strong, and others are small and weak. In scansion, we care about the strength of each syllable in a word.

When we speak or read, we naturally emphasize certain syllables because they are bigger or sound more important. In scansion, we mark those emphasized syllables as strong (using a symbol that looks like /) and the ones that aren't emphasized as weak (using a symbol that looks like u).

We then group these syllables together into "feet," just like you might group blocks together to make a tower. Each foot is made up of one or more strong and weak syllables, and they all fit together like puzzle pieces.

By scanning a poem or song, we can understand the rhythm and flow of the words, just like you can understand how a tower is built by looking at the blocks. It helps us appreciate the sounds and patterns of language in a new way.
