ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Scotomization

Okay kiddo, have you ever heard of scotomization? It's a big word that basically means not being able to see certain things.

Sometimes our brains can play tricks on us and make us think there's nothing there, even if there really is. It's like if you look at a picture but there's a part that you don't notice because your brain just skips over it.

This can happen when we're driving and we don't notice a stop sign, or when we're reading and we skip over a word.

Scientists have studied this and they found out that our brains do this to help us focus on the things that are important. It's like a superpower, but sometimes it can be dangerous if we miss something important.

So we have to be careful and pay attention to everything around us, even if our brains are telling us it's not important. That way we can stay safe and not miss anything cool or interesting.
