Sea state

Sea state refers to how the water in the ocean looks and feels. It's like how a big puddle can look flat or wavy, but way bigger and deeper.

Sometimes the ocean is calm and flat, like a sheet of glass. This is in what we call "calm" sea state. Other times, the ocean can be very rough and choppy, with big waves crashing against each other. This is what we call "rough" sea state.

Sea state is important for sailors and ships because it affects how easy or difficult it is to sail. In calm seas, it's easier to navigate and move quickly. In rough seas, it's much harder, and ships might need to slow down or even stop altogether.

People who study the ocean, like scientists and meteorologists, use different scales to describe sea state. Some of these scales use numbers or words to describe how calm or rough the water is. This helps sailors and ship captains know what to expect and prepare for any kind of weather or water conditions.
