ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Second messenger

Imagine your body like a big castle. There are messengers who have to deliver important messages from the outside to the inside of the castle.

The first messenger knocks on the big castle door and says, "Hey, I have a message!" The castle guards listen to the message and then they pass it on to the second messenger who is inside the castle.

The second messenger than runs around delivering the message to different rooms and people inside the castle.

In your body, the first messenger is usually a hormone or a chemical. It knocks on your cell's door (or membrane) and tells it to do something. But the cell can't do it alone, so it sends a message inside to the second messenger.

This second messenger then runs around your cell delivering the message to different parts or organelles, telling them what to do.

So, the second messenger is like an important messenger inside your cell that delivers messages and tells different parts of that cell what to do. It helps your body communicate and work together as a team.
