In the year 1795, there was a law made called the "Seditious Meetings Act". This law said that people were not allowed to get together in big groups and talk about things that the government didn't like. The government thought that if people got together and talked about things they didn't like, it could lead to trouble and they didn't want that.
So, the Seditious Meetings Act made it illegal for groups of more than 50 people to meet and talk about things that could make the government look bad or cause problems. If people did talk about these things, they could get in big trouble and even go to jail.
Now, this might not seem fair or right, because people should have the right to talk about important things and share their opinions. But at the time, the government was worried about keeping things under control and didn't want people causing trouble.
Today, we have the right to freedom of speech and assembly, which means we can speak our minds and come together in groups to discuss important issues. But back then, the government didn't want people doing that because they thought it could lead to problems.
