ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Segregating site

A segregating site is like trying to figure out what makes you and your friend different even though you both have two eyes, a nose, and a mouth. Imagine you and your friend have a long string of letters that spell out your genetic code. Some of the letters are different between you and your friend, but most of them are the same. Those different letters are called segregating sites.

Now, imagine you have a bunch of other friends with their own long strings of letters, and you want to figure out how they are all related. By looking at the different letters at each segregating site, you can start to build a family tree of sorts. This can help scientists understand how different species changed and evolved over time.

So, basically, segregating sites are little spots in your genetic code where you and others might be different, and by studying those differences, scientists can learn more about how we all came to be.
