ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Selection (linguistics)

Selection in linguistics means choosing the right words that go together to make a proper sentence. It's like putting together a puzzle where you have to pick the right shaped pieces to fit in the right spots. Just like how you wouldn't put a square-shaped piece in a circle-shaped spot, you wouldn't use certain words in certain places in a sentence.

For example, you wouldn't say "I drank the bed" because it doesn't make sense. Instead, you would say "I slept in the bed" because it's the correct selection of words that makes sense.

Selection is important because it helps us communicate clearly and effectively. If we didn't choose the right words, our sentences wouldn't make sense and people wouldn't understand what we're trying to say.
