ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Selective hearing

Imagine you are in a loud room, maybe a party or a playground with lots of noise. You want to talk to your friend who is standing right next to you, but you cannot hear them clearly because of all the noise. Your brain is very clever and can help you focus on what your friend is saying by using selective hearing.

Selective hearing is when your brain chooses to focus on something specific that you want to hear and filters out all the other sounds around you. It's like a special power that your brain has that can make it easier for you to concentrate and listen to what is really important.

For example, if you are watching your favorite TV show and your mom asks you if you want broccoli for dinner, you might not hear her because your brain is busy focusing on the TV show. But as soon as your parent says something like "Do you want ice cream?", suddenly you can hear them perfectly, even if the TV is still playing.

Sometimes, selective hearing can be a bad thing because it means that you might miss important information that you are not paying attention to. But other times, it can help you listen better and get things done more efficiently. So next time you are in a noisy situation, try using your selective hearing power to focus on what is important and tune out the rest of the noise.
