ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Self-advocacy

Self-advocacy means speaking up for yourself and telling others what you need or want. It's like when you want to play with a toy but your friend has it, and you say "Can I please have a turn with the toy?" That's self-advocacy!

Sometimes, we might need to speak up for ourselves in other situations too. For example, if we have a disability or special need, we might need accommodations to help us do our best in school or in other activities. By speaking up and telling others what we need, we can help make sure those accommodations are in place.

Self-advocacy is important because it helps us get what we need and want, and it also helps others understand our perspective. It can be hard to speak up sometimes, but it's an important skill that we can practice and get better at over time.
