ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Semi-professional

Okay kiddo, imagine you love playing soccer. You play with your friends at school and you’re pretty good at it. One day, a team in your town asks if you want to play for them. They’re called a semi-professional team because they’re not quite professional, but they’re not just playing for fun either.

Semi-professional means that people are getting paid for their skills, but they’re not making a full-time living from it. It’s kind of like a part-time job. They’re not professional athletes, who get paid to play their sport full-time, and it’s not just a hobby where they play for fun.

Semi-professional teams are usually smaller and less well-known compared to professional teams, but they still play against other teams in competitions. And, just like professional athletes, semi-professionals train and practice a lot to improve their skills and win games.

So, basically, semi-professional means getting paid for doing something you love, but not making a full-time living from it. It’s kind of like having your cake and eating it too – you still get to play your sport, but you also make a little money from it!
