ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Seminorm

A seminorm is a way of measuring something in math that is like a ruler. Remember when you use a ruler to measure how long your pencil is or how tall your friend is? A seminorm is like a ruler, but it can measure other things too, like how fast something is moving or how bumpy something is.

Now, a seminorm can't measure everything like a regular ruler. It has some special rules that it has to follow. For example, if you use a seminorm to measure how long something is, you can't say that it is negative (like -5 inches). That wouldn't make sense!

Seminorms are very useful in math because they help us to understand and compare different things. For example, let's say we have two cars and we want to know which one is faster. We can use a seminorm to measure their speed and compare the results.

So, in summary, a seminorm is like a special ruler that can measure different things, but it has some special rules that it has to follow. It helps us to compare things and understand them better.
