ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sequence logo

A sequence logo is like a picture that shows which letters are most important in a bunch of words. Imagine you have a bunch of words, like "apple", "banana", and "cherry", and you want to see which letters are most important in those words.

First, you line up all the letters so that the "a" in "apple" is in the same spot as the "a" in "banana" and the "a" in "cherry".

Then, you make a little picture where each letter is represented by a column, and the height of the column shows how often that letter appears in the words.

So if the "a" appears a lot in all the words, the "a" column will be very tall. If the "c" only appears in the word "cherry", the "c" column will be very short.

This picture helps you see which letters are important in the words, and can be used by scientists to study things like DNA and protein sequences to see which parts are most important.
