ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Shahadah

Shahadah is one of the five main things that Muslims (people who follow the religion of Islam) have to do in order to be really good followers of Allah. It's like a promise that they make to Allah - they say certain words that show their loyalty to Allah and to the prophet Muhammad. When they say it, it means that they believe there is only one God named Allah, and that Muhammad is his messenger. This is a very important thing in Islam, and the words they say are called the shahadah.

It goes like this: "There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger." Muslims say it a lot – every single prayer that they say every day has the shahadah in it. It's really important for Muslims to believe in the shahadah and to say it often so that they can be reminded of their faith in Allah and what it means to be a good follower of Islam. It's like a special promise that they make to themselves and to Allah that they will always try to do the right thing and be good people.
