ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Shalom bayit

Shalom Bayit is a Hebrew term that means "peace in the home" and refers to creating a peaceful and harmonious household. Just like we want to be nice to our friends, family and pets to make them happy, we also want to be kind and loving to the people we live with in our home. This means treating each other with respect, being patient, and communicating kindly with one another.

For example, if someone is feeling upset or angry about something, it's important to listen to them and understand why they are feeling that way. It's also important to express your own feelings in a calm and respectful way, instead of yelling or being mean. Being considerate and helping out around the house or with each other's problems can also help create a peaceful atmosphere.

Shalom Bayit also includes something called "balance." This means making sure that everyone in the household has their own space and time to do the things they enjoy. It's important to share responsibilities and chores and take turns making decisions. When everybody feels heard and respected, it's easier to create a joyful and safe home that everyone can enjoy.
