ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sheerleg

Okay, so imagine you want to lift up a really big and heavy toy that you have in your room. But the toy is so heavy that you can't lift it by yourself. What do you do? You could ask an adult to help you, but if the toy is really, really heavy, even the grown-ups might not be strong enough to lift it all by themselves.

That's where a machine called a sheerleg comes in handy. A sheerleg is like a special crane that is designed to lift super heavy things that are too big or too difficult to move with your own strength. Sheerlegs have really long arms, kind of like the ones on a dinosaur, and they are very strong.

When you need to use a sheerleg, you'll first need to lay down some big wooden beams or metal plates on the ground. This is so the sheerleg has a stable base to stand on. Then, you'll attach the toy or whatever it is that you want to lift to a special hook that hangs from the end of the sheerleg's long arm.

Next, you or an adult will use a remote control to operate the sheerleg. When you press a button on the remote, the sheerleg's arm will slowly start to lift up. It will be moving kind of like a giraffe's neck when it's reaching up to eat leaves from a tall tree. As the sheerleg lifts the toy or heavy thing, it will swing it over to wherever you need it to go.

And that's it! Thanks to the sheerleg, you were able to lift something that was too heavy for you and too big for an adult to move without a machine. Just like you'd use a toy crane to move smaller toys around your room, the sheerleg is a big, powerful crane that can help you move really, really heavy objects.
