ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Shell (theater)

When you go to a theater, the shell is the big curved piece of wood or metal that you see behind the actors or musicians. It's kind of like a big shelf that hangs on the wall. The shell helps to project the sound from the performers out into the audience. It also helps to make the stage look more complete and full, like a giant frame around a picture. The shell is usually designed to match the style of the theater, and can be painted or decorated in many different ways to make it look pretty.
