Okay kiddo, so a long, long time ago, something very bad happened in a place called Budapest, which is a city in Europe. People were being treated very badly just because they were different from other people. These people were called Jews, and they were forced to leave their homes and live in a special place called a ghetto.
One day, the soldiers who were in charge of the city came to the ghetto and took lots of people away, mostly Jews, to a place called a concentration camp. It was a very scary and sad time for everyone.
Well, many years later, when things were better, some people in Budapest wanted to make sure that no one would ever forget what had happened to the Jews during that time. They wanted to create a special memorial in memory of those people who had been taken away from the ghetto.
So they came up with an idea to put a bunch of shoes on the bank of a river called the Danube, which runs through the city. There were all kinds of shoes: big ones, small ones, fancy ones, and plain ones. They were old shoes that people had left behind when they were taken away to the concentration camp.
The shoes on the Danube Memorial are there to remind us of the terrible things that happened to the Jews during that time, and to make sure that we never forget how important it is to treat everyone with kindness and respect, no matter who they are.
