ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Shooting of Andy Lopez

So imagine you're playing with your toy gun outside, pretending to be a police officer. Now imagine that Andy Lopez was outside playing too, but he wasn't pretending. A real police officer thought that Andy Lopez's toy gun was a real gun, so the police officer shot him.

That was a really big and scary mistake. The police officer didn't mean to hurt Andy Lopez, but because he thought the toy gun was a real gun, he thought he had to protect himself. But it turned out that the toy gun wasn't a real gun, and Andy Lopez got hurt because of the mistake.

A lot of people are upset and sad about what happened to Andy Lopez. They think that the police officer should have been more careful and made sure that the gun was actually real before he shot. And they want to make sure that something like this doesn't happen again in the future, so people are talking about ways that we can make sure everyone is safe.
