ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Shooting of Tamir Rice

Okay, kiddo. So, Tamir Rice was a 12-year-old boy who was playing with a toy gun outside a recreation center in Cleveland, Ohio. Someone saw him playing with the toy gun and called the police to report it.

When the police arrived, they saw Tamir with the toy gun and thought it was real. They got out of their car and one of the officers, Timothy Loehmann, shot Tamir. Tamir was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately, he died the next day.

The reason this is controversial is because some people think that the police should have been more careful and taken more time to figure out if the gun was real or not before shooting. Other people think that the police had to protect themselves and others and acted appropriately.

There have been investigations and lawsuits and lots of people have different opinions on what happened that day. It's a very sad situation because a young boy lost his life and it's important that we try to understand what happened so we can prevent similar tragedies in the future.
