ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Shuhari

Shuhari is a way of learning and mastering something, like a karate move or playing an instrument. The word shuhari is a Japanese term made up of three smaller words: shu, ha, and ri.

Shu means to follow the rules and learn the basics. For example, when you are first learning how to play the guitar, you need to memorize where each note is and how to hold the guitar.

Ha means to break away from the rules and start to improvise. You may change the way you hold the guitar or try out new chords.

Ri means to transcend the rules and become a master. You may have your own unique style and improvisation techniques that others may try to learn from you.

So, in essence, shuhari is like learning how to ride a bike. At first, you need to learn the basics like balance and pedaling. Then you can start to try more advanced skills like riding with no hands or popping a wheelie. Eventually, you can become a master and ride a bike in your own unique way.
