Sign (mathematics)

A sign in math tells us whether a number is positive or negative. Think of it like a happy or sad face, but instead of emotions it's telling us about a number.

If a number has a positive sign, it's like a happy face, meaning it's a number that is greater than zero. For example, 3 has a positive sign because it's a number that's greater than zero, and we can write it as "+3".

If a number has a negative sign, it's like a sad face, meaning it's a number that is less than zero. For example, -5 has a negative sign because it's a number that's less than zero, and we can write it as "-5".

So, if we see a number with a sign in math, we know whether it's a happy or sad number, or in other words, if it's greater than or less than zero.
