ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Signoria

Signoria is a big word that means a group of people who rule over a city or country. Think of it like a team of superheroes who work together to make sure everything is safe and everyone is happy in a certain place.

A long long time ago, in Italy, there were many cities that had their own Signoria. These groups were made up of important people like wealthy merchants and powerful nobles. They made decisions about how the city should be run and what was best for the people who lived there.

Sometimes, the Signoria did good things and made the city better for everyone. But other times, they only looked out for themselves and didn't really care about the regular people. So, it was a tricky business to have a Signoria, especially if they didn't listen to what the people wanted.

Nowadays, most cities have another name for their ruling group, like a council or a government. But some places still use the word Signoria to talk about their past and remember that time when everyone looked to a group of powerful people to make important decisions.
