Okay kiddo, have you ever heard of New Year's Day? It's the day when we celebrate the start of a brand new year. But did you know that different cultures have different New Year's Days?
Well, the Sinhalese people from Sri Lanka celebrate their own New Year's Day, which is called Sinhalese New Year. It usually falls on either April 13th or 14th every year.
So, how do they celebrate Sinhalese New Year? It's a super fun and exciting celebration! First, they clean up their homes and decorate them with colorful lights, flowers, and other decorations. Then, they prepare delicious traditional foods like kiribath (a type of rice pudding), kavum (a sweet fried snack), and kokis (a crispy, deep-fried snack).
But that's not all! They also dress up in brand new clothes, play lots of fun games, and give each other presents. One of the most popular games is called "Avurudu keliya" where people have to break a clay pot filled with goodies while they are blindfolded!
And last but not least, they visit their relatives, friends, and neighbors to wish them a happy new year. It's a time for people to come together, celebrate, and share joy and happiness.
So, that's what Sinhalese New Year is all about, my little friend! A time to celebrate new beginnings, have fun, and spread love and joy!
