Sinusitis

Sinusitis is when the hollow spaces in your head called sinuses get swollen or infected. You have four pairs of sinuses, two behind your cheekbones, one between your eyes, and one behind your forehead.

When you have a cold or allergies, your sinuses might get blocked and filled with mucus that cannot drain properly, causing pressure and pain. That's why you might feel like you have a headache or a toothache when you have sinusitis.

Sometimes, bacteria or viruses can infect your sinuses, making the inflammation worse. This can lead to symptoms such as fever, nasal congestion, cough, and bad breath.

To treat sinusitis, your doctor might prescribe antibiotics, decongestants, or nasal sprays. You can also use saline solution or steam to help clear out your sinuses. In some cases, you might need surgery to remove blockages or drainage problems in your sinuses.

The best way to prevent sinusitis is to practice good hygiene, such as washing your hands frequently, avoiding close contact with sick people, and getting your flu shot every year. If you have allergies, you can try to avoid triggers such as pollen, dust, mold, or pet dander.
