ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Six o'clock swill

When your grown-ups were little, there was a time in some places where it was very important to go to the pub and have a lot of drinks before the clock struck six! This was because the law said that the pub had to stop serving drinks at six o'clock at night. This led to people rushing to the pub after work and cramming as many drinks as possible into a short amount of time. This was called the "six o'clock swill." People would drink a lot, and the pubs would get very busy and noisy. It wasn't always very nice, and some people didn't like it very much. Now, things are different, and people don't rush to the pub like they used to. Plus, the laws have changed too, and the pubs can stay open a lot longer.
