ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Skybox (video games)

Imagine you're looking out of a window from inside a room. You can see everything outside through the window, but the things outside can't come into the room. That's sort of what a skybox is in video games.

A skybox is a big image that surrounds the game world, kind of like a giant cube-shaped room. This image can show what the sky, sun, moon, stars, clouds, and anything else you would see in the sky look like. The skybox allows the player to feel like they are inside a big open world, but they can't actually go to the places they see outside of the skybox.

The game designers make the skybox look as realistic as possible, so the player can feel like they are part of a bigger world. Some skyboxes change based on the time of day or the conditions of the game. For example, if it's rainy or sunny, the skybox may change accordingly.

Overall, a skybox is like a big, imaginary window that lets you see the world outside of your game, but you can't touch or reach it - you can only enjoy it from afar.
