ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Slate (writing)

Slate is like a fancy kind of chalkboard that people used in the olden days. It's made of a hard, flat piece of rock or metal that they wrote on with a special kind of pencil called a stylus. Whenever they made a mistake, they could easily erase it by wiping the slate clean with a special cloth or their hands. They were very popular in schools because they were cheaper and more durable than paper, but now we have better and more convenient ways to write, like on computers and tablets!
