ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Slave Ship (Pohl novel)

Okay kiddo, so a slave ship is a big boat that was used a long time ago to bring people over from Africa to other places like America. But it wasn't a fun ride, because these people were forced to come over against their will - they were captured from their homes and taken away from their families. It was a really terrible thing to do.

In the Pohl novel, it tells a story about a group of people who were on one of these awful slave ships. They were treated very badly - they were packed in tight spaces, didn't have enough food or water, and were treated like they weren't even human beings. Imagine being stuck in a very small, dark room with a lot of other people for weeks and weeks, without being able to move around or see anything outside. It would be really scary and uncomfortable, right?

The people on the slave ship didn't know what was going to happen to them when they got to the other side - but they knew it wasn't going to be good. They were going to be sold to be slaves, and have to work for other people without any pay or freedom. It's a really sad and unfair thing that happened in history, and we need to remember it so it never happens again.
