A sleeve is like a tube that goes around your arm in a piece of clothing, like a shirt or a jacket. When people make clothes with sleeves, they have to put the sleeve together with the rest of the shirt or jacket. This is called sleeve construction.
First, they cut out the piece of fabric that will become the sleeve. Then, they sew it together by joining the raw edges of the fabric using a straight stitch on a sewing machine. After that, they attach the sleeve to the armhole of the shirt or jacket.
To do this, they match the top of the sleeve (called the sleeve cap) to the shoulder seam of the shirt or jacket. Then, they sew the sleeve in place using another straight stitch. Finally, they fold over the raw edges of the sleeve and the shirt or jacket and sew them down to create a neat finish.
Sometimes, there are other details added to the sleeve construction, like cuffs, gathers, or pleats. These can add some extra flair and style to the finished garment. But regardless of the details, all sleeves have to be constructed in a way that fits the arm and looks good with the rest of the clothing item.
