ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Smooth atlas

Imagine you have a big globe that shows all the countries and oceans on Earth. Now, imagine that you want to draw a map of each country on the globe, and you want all the maps to fit together perfectly without any gaps or overlaps. You would need to make sure that you use the same kind of ruler and measurements for each map, and that the borders of each country match up exactly where they meet.

This is kind of like what a smooth atlas is in math. Instead of countries, we have patches of a shape, and we want to make sure that each patch fits together perfectly with the others. Instead of a ruler, we use something called coordinates to measure how the patches fit together. And instead of a globe, we might be working with a sphere or some other shape.

With a smooth atlas, we can make sure that the patches are all smooth and easy to work with. It's kind of like putting together a puzzle, but we have to make sure that all the pieces are the right shape and size, and that they fit together perfectly without any gaps or overlaps.
