Social identity model of deindividuation effects (SIDE)

The social identity model of deindividuation effects is sort of like a science of how people act when they are around other people, especially when those people are really similar to them. This model suggests that when people are in a group and the members of that group all have something in common, like skin color or religion, they might act differently than they would when they are alone. They might make bolder decisions, get more emotional, say things they normally wouldn’t say, or do things they normally wouldn’t do. This is called deindividuation and it happens when people forget about themselves and focus on the group.
