Remember when your teacher made you line up in height order? That's like what the Socio Economic Caste Census does for all the people in India.
India is a big country with a lot of people, and the government wanted to see how people were doing in terms of how much money they had and what kind of jobs they had. So they sent out people to ask questions to every household in India.
They asked questions like how many rooms the house had, what kind of jobs people had, and how much money they made. Then they put all the answers into a big computer and grouped people into different categories, kind of like lining toys up from tallest to shortest.
These groups are called castes, and there are four of them: Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and General. People in the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes usually have less money and are not treated as well as people in the General category.
The Socio Economic Caste Census helps the government to figure out how many people are in each caste and how they can help them. It's important because everyone should have a fair chance to do well in life, no matter what caste they're in.
