Soft gamma repeater

A soft gamma repeater (SGR) is a special type of star that gives off bursts of energetic radiation that can travel through space. This radiation is called gamma-rays and is much more powerful than the light that comes from the Sun. SGRs are usually very old stars that have been around for a long time. The radiation they give off is so powerful that it can be detected from very far away. Scientists use special telescopes to see the gamma-rays given off by SGRs and can use this data to learn more about the stars.
