Soil science is the study of soil and how it affects the plants and animals that live in it. Soil is made up of a lot of tiny pieces of rock and minerals, organic material (such as the remains of plants and animals), and lots of tiny living organisms (called microbes) like bacteria and fungi. All these things make up the soil and understanding how they all interact is called soil science. Soil scientists can tell us what kinds of plants, animals and crops can grow in different types of soil, and also figure out ways to make our soil healthier and more productive for growing crops.
