ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Solitaire (cipher)

Solitaire is a type of secret code where you take a deck of playing cards and use them to make a secret message that nobody else can read.

First, you choose a secret keyword that you will use to scramble the deck of cards. Let's say your secret keyword is "cat".

Then, you take out all the cards with the letters of your keyword (C, A, and T). In this case, you would take out all the clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades with those letters on them.

Next, you shuffle the remaining deck of cards really well.

To encode your message, you draw a card and add the value of another card according to specific rules. For example, if your drawn card is the 6 of spades and the next card is the 4 of diamonds, you would add them together to get 10.

You repeat this step for each letter in your message and write down the resulting numbers.

To decode the message, you reverse the process by subtracting the value of the second card from the value of the drawn card.

Solitaire is a cool way to make secret messages for fun or to keep things private. Just be sure to keep your secret keyword, well, a secret!
