ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Solving triangles

Solving triangles means figuring out all the missing parts of a triangle when you already know some of the parts.

Think of a triangle like a pizza slice with three sides. Each side has a different name, we call them A, B, and C. The A side is the longest side, the B side is one of the shorter sides, and the C side is the other shorter side.

We can also talk about the angles inside the triangle. The angle across from the A side is called the angle A, the angle across from the B side is called the angle B, and the angle across from the C side is called the angle C.

When we want to solve a triangle, we usually know some of these things already. For example, we might know the lengths of two sides, or we might know the length of one side and one angle.

To find out the missing parts, we can use something called the Pythagorean theorem, which helps us find the length of the longest side of the triangle, called the hypotenuse. We can also use something called trigonometry, which is a fancy way of saying we use math to figure out the missing parts.

Once we know all the parts of the triangle, we can use them to do all sorts of things, like figuring out the area of the triangle or the distance between two points.

So, solving triangles is like putting a puzzle together. You start with some pieces, and you use math to figure out the missing pieces until you know everything about the triangle!
