ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sound Reduction Index

Sound reduction index is like putting on earmuffs to block out noise.

You know how when you put on your earmuffs, they make it harder to hear sounds around you? That's because they have a sound reduction index or rating. This rating tells you how effective the earmuffs are at reducing or blocking the sound waves that are traveling around you.

The same thing happens with walls, floors, and ceilings in buildings. They are designed with materials that have a sound reduction index or rating, which tells you how much they can reduce or block sound. A higher sound reduction index means the materials are better at blocking out noise.

So when you're in your room and your parents are watching a loud movie in the living room next door, you might hear some of the noise. But if your walls have a high sound reduction index, like putting on earmuffs, they can block out more of the noise from the living room and you'll be able to enjoy a quieter space in your room.
