ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sound barrier

Hello there! Do you know what sound is? It's the noise you hear when someone talks or when you clap your hands. Now, imagine a really fast plane flying in the air. It makes a loud noise, right? That noise is called a sonic boom.

The sound barrier is like a big invisible fence in the air that stops the plane from going faster than the speed of sound. If the plane tries to go faster, it will hit the fence and make a loud sonic boom.

It's like when you run really fast and then hit a wall. You can't go any faster because the wall stops you from running more. The same thing happens with the sound barrier and planes.

But, some fast planes can break the sound barrier by going faster than the speed of sound. When they do, they make a really loud noise that can be heard for miles!

So, the sound barrier is like a limit that planes can't cross or they make a loud boom sound. And some planes can break that limit and make an even louder noise!
