ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sources of Islamic law

Dear little one, Islamic Law is a set of guidelines on how Muslims should live their lives. These guidelines are based on certain sources. Let me explain them to you in simple words.

1. The Quran: This is the most important source of Islamic law. It is believed to be the word of Allah, revealed to Prophet Muhammad through Angel Jibril. It contains guidance on how Muslims should worship, live, and behave. It covers all aspects of life, from personal to social and political.

2. Hadith: These are the sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad, recorded by his companions. They provide guidance on how to interpret and apply the Quran. Hadith also form the basis of Islamic ethics and morality.

3. Ijma: This refers to the consensus of scholars on certain issues. It is believed that when all scholars agree on a ruling, it is considered binding on all Muslims.

4. Qiyas: This is the process of reasoning by analogy. It involves deriving a ruling on an issue based on an existing ruling on a similar issue.

5. Ijtihad: This refers to the process of personal reasoning and interpretation. It is mainly used in cases where there is no clear guidance from the Quran, Hadith, Ijma or Qiyas.

These sources of Islamic Law guide Muslims on how to live their lives in accordance with the teachings of Islam. Hope this helps!
