ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Soyuz abort modes

A Soyuz spacecraft is like a big car that travels to space with astronauts inside. Just like a car, sometimes things can go wrong and the astronauts need to be safe. That's why the Soyuz has different modes to stay safe in case of any problem.

The first mode is called the "planned mode". It's when everything goes as planned and the Soyuz launches into space safely. The astronauts are happy and they can continue their journey to space.

The second mode is called the "ballistic reentry mode". It's when the Soyuz is already in space and something goes wrong. For example, if one of the engines doesn't work properly, the Soyuz can't reach the right speed to stay in orbit around Earth. When this happens, the Soyuz will start to fall back to Earth, like a big rock. But the Soyuz has a special system that helps it to glide down safely. It's called the "descent module" and it has parachutes that will slow down the Soyuz until it lands on the ground. It's a little bit like a skydiver who jumps from a plane and uses a parachute to land safely.

The third mode is called the "emergency escape mode". It's when something really bad happens during the first few minutes of the launch, like an explosion or a fire. When this happens, the Soyuz needs to separate from the rocket that takes it to space. The astronauts inside the Soyuz will be protected by a special seat that absorbs the force of the separation. Then, the Soyuz will use its own rockets to fly away from the rocket that had the problem. This is like a superhero who needs to fly away from danger and escape to safety.

So, the Soyuz has different modes to be safe in any situation. Just like a car, it has safety features that help the astronauts to stay alive and return safely to Earth.
