Spatial deixis

Okay kiddo, have you ever played hide and seek? Let's say you're playing hide and seek in a big park with your friends. And your friend tells you to go find Suzy. But you don't know where Suzy is. So your friend says, "She's over there by the big tree."

Now, when your friend says "over there", they are using what we call "spatial deixis". That means they are using words like "here", "there", "left", "right", "up", and "down" to tell you where something is located. Just like in the game of hide and seek, when your friend uses "spatial deixis" they are helping you understand the location of something.

So, spatial deixis is just a fancy way of saying that we use words to talk about where something is in space or location. It helps us to understand how to get from one place to another and where things are located in relationship to each other.
