ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Special functions

Special functions are like special toys in math that are specifically made to help us solve certain problems. It’s like using a puzzle piece that fits perfectly in a certain spot.

Sometimes, when we do math problems, we end up with a problem that can’t be solved with the normal math rules we learned in school. This is where these special functions come in to help us solve these tricky problems.

There are many different special functions, each designed to solve different types of problems. For example, there’s the Gaussian function that helps us solve problems related to probability and statistics, and the Bessel function that helps us solve problems related to waves and vibrations.

Although special functions may seem like really hard and complicated toys, they’re actually very helpful and make math problems easier to solve. They’re like a superhero that helps us save the day when we’re stuck on a tricky math problem.
