Speciation is the process that plants or animals go through when they become two different kinds (or species). It usually happens over a long period of time. For example, if two different kinds of monkeys live in different parts of the world and never meet each other, the monkeys will slowly change in different ways. After enough time, the two groups of monkeys will be different enough that they can't have babies together. That's speciation — the two types of monkeys have become two separate species because of their differences.
