ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Species distribution

Imagine if you had a bunch of toys in your toy box, and you had to organize them by which ones belong with which groups. Maybe you put all the cars together and all the dolls together. Scientists do something kind of like that, but with animals and plants. They group living things into different categories, and those categories are called "species."

Now, species distribution is all about where those different groups of animals and plants live. It's like a big map of where you might find specific species around the world. Just like how you might find all your toy cars in one part of your toy box, you might find all the pandas in one part of the world, and all the kangaroos in another.

Scientists study species distribution to understand more about how different creatures live and how they interact with their environments. They want to know why some animals can only survive in certain places, and why others seem to be able to live pretty much anywhere. They also study how human activities, like building cities or polluting, can affect where different species can live.

So, imagine you had a big map of the world, and you were trying to color in all the different places where you might find different animals or plants. That's kind of what species distribution is all about!
