ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Spectral acceleration

Spectral acceleration is a measure of how much a ground may shake during an earthquake. It is measured on machines called seismographs that measure the energy of ground shaking and compare it to the energy of the same type of shaking at different speeds, or frequencies. When the shaking energy is faster, this is called higher spectral acceleration. Put simply, spectral acceleration is like measuring how much the ground shakes during an earthquake.
